Before coming to the USA in 1984, Jan Ebeling worked as an apprentice under late German master Herbert Rehbein and earned his berreiter, a German license to train horses. In 1984, he moved to the USA to work alongside Olympian Robert Dover while Dover was preparing for the '84 Olympics. Jan has been a major force since the USET Intermediaire I Championship in 1998, when he began riding as a US citizen. That year Jan finished as Reserve Champion at the Intermediaire I Championship held in NJ as part of the Bayer/USET Festival of Champions.
In 2000, Jan found his way back to the winner's circle in NJ, where he topped the field of the nation's top Intermediaire I horse-and-rider combinations to win the Intermediaire I Championship. In 2002, he earned Reserve Championship honors, No stranger to the winner's circle at the Intermediaire I Championship, Jan achieved success again in 2003 at the Festival where he posted 3rd & 4th place finishes. Jan's 2003 finishes earned him the right to represent the US at the 2003 Pan Am Games in the Dominican Republic. While there he was the highest ranking US rider and clinched the Gold medal for the US team and he finished 5th overall individually.
In 2006, competing again at Gladstone for the Intermediare Championships, Jan and the mare Rafalca achieved third place. In 2007, Jan and Rafalca made their debut in the Grand Prix arena during the World Cup in Las Vegas where they demonstrated the Grand Prix test before a full house before actual competition began.
In the fall of 2007, Jan was awarded a USET training grant and made the decision to return to Germany taking three horses. Subsequent competition success proved the wisdom of the decision to make the trip. 2008 was a building year for Jan and the horses, culminating in Jan's decision to try to qualify for the next World Cup, again in Las Vegas. In 2009, Ebeling and Rafalca returned to Las Vegas for World Cup, this time representing the U.S. along with the two other horse-rider partnerships that qualified.
